Statement
about my work:
In my art, familiar visual iconography serves as a foundation on which
my imagination can build. My sculptures incorporate suns, human heads
and figures, hearts, and flowers. Each "icon" is interpreted and
has abstract or fantastic forms wrapped into it and in this way, embraces
surrealism. My aim is to present the viewer with an alternative format
to consider an object and to provide a means of developing an emotional
connection to an object normally taken for granted or narrowly experienced
in everyday life. I have a strong interest in how consumerism affects the
natural environment, so I frequently combine organic and industrial based
forms such as machinery gears and sprockets, seaweed, tree branches, disposable
water bottles, chains and other discarded or found objects. In my
completed work, I would like to simultaneously reveal beauty, whimsy, mystery,
humor and fragility.
My sculpture can be a mirror of ideas and thoughts present in our society
and simultaneously a window into my soul. These creations provide
a forum to address my emotional, spiritual, and intellectual questions.
I manifest ideas from my subconscious, and there are times when I do not
know the whole meaning of the completed artwork. As a result of the
creative process, I hope to learn about society and myself while evoking
enjoyment and contemplation for the viewer. |
