Cast GlassI first discovered the joy of glass through casting. You can see an overview of the process in the slideshow below. I revel in this industrial process: the heavy-duty tools, the heat and science behind melting and cooling, and the physicality of the work. I appreciate both the destruction and creation involved in casting: glass melts under the intense heat, and parts join together to become a single unit. When casting a piece of sculpture, an idea transmutes from nothing into something. It must undergo a physical metamorphosis changing from a liquid to a solid before complete--a kind of alchemy. I enjoy the way light can be transmitted and reflected in glass; a sculpture becomes a beacon, amplifying my message.
